Eddie Izzard is an absolute comedic legend.

He began his stand up career more than 30 years ago, and became a staple on stage, television and film ever since.

He's back in the country as part of his Wunderbar world tour, but comedy is only a small part of his journey.

Izzard is a prominent Labour supporter, donates a lot of his time to charity – including having run 27 marathons in 27 days for Comic Relief – and has never shied away from his transgenderism.

Izzard told Mike Hosking that what seemed different three decades ago has now become mainstream.

"If you think of what anyone is trying to do as a minority, you are trying to bring yourself into society. In 1985, I thought I was a naturally boring person, I thought I could use my boringness to bring it into society."

He says he has been combative without trying to start a fight, and is simply looking at getting on. Izzard says that it has been worthwhile embracing his true self.

"If you're more honest about your sexuality, that's got to be better."
