The world of communication is changing - 20 percent of us don't have a land line anymore.

Half of millennials say they don't have one.

AUT World Internet Project director Dr Philippa Smith told Mike Hosking we're probably on a par with the US and the UK.

"Certainly this is just all part of the digital revolution if you like. Things have changed dramatically and the use of mobile and smart phones around the world is phenomenal."

Smith said land lines only allow you to make calls but mobiles let you to do that as well as send texts, instant message and access social media sites.

"Who wouldn't want to do all those things on one device? It's basically glued to a lot of people if you like. It's just so much a part of their lives."

She said it's very difficult to predict whether the land line will die out altogether but would like to think it might always be there.
