Medical experts say the University of Otago isn't blameless in a med student cheating scandal.

More than 50 Otago University medical students won't be allowed to graduate, after submitting false overseas work experience records.

Medical Association chair Dr Kate Baddock told Mike Hosking the university could've made the situation more clear to the students taking their placements overseas.

She says while clinical practices are clearly outlined - social practices aren't.

“While the cheating scandal is disappointing, it doesn't affect doctors' performance. Their abilities and attitude as a doctor are unchanged."
