Researchers have found a drug they say halves the risk of death for those with pancreatic diabetes.
At least 10,000 New Zealanders suffer from this particular type of diabetes.
Lead author Dr Jaelim Cho, a PhD student at the university’s Faculty of Medical and Health Sciencesold, told Mike Hosking sufferers will benefit from the use of the metformin drug.
He says the drug is not actually very expensive and it is widely available in clinics.
The survival benefit of metformin was even more pronounced than in patients with type 2 diabetes, whose risk of death was reduced by 25 per cent.Â
The study results are published in Diabetes Care, the world’s top clinical diabetes journal and the official journal of the American Diabetes Association.
