New Zealanders are involved in a crowd funding campaign to free Aboriginal Australian women jailed for not paying small fines.

The campaign has raised more than $100,000 in just two days.

The organisation Sisters Inside hopes to release as many as 30 women from prison this week, who have been imprisoned for defaulting on fines.

One woman who owes around $3000 was unable to call police over domestic violence concerns until her debt was cleared.

Australia correspondent Donna Demaio told Tim Dower around 2000 people have already given to the cause.

"The leading organiser of the fundraiser Debbie Kilroy says it warms her heart, and she feels very grateful that so many people are helping out."
