Protection for Maui and hector dolphins is set to be expanded with just 63 Maui dolphins left.

Minister of Conservation Eugenie Sage and Minister of Fisheries Stuart Nash have released proposals for consultation for a revised threat management plan to protect the native marine mammals.

The proposals are gaining a mixed reaction from conservationists, with some saying it doesn't go far enough

Worldwide Fund for Nature NZ Programme Manager David Tong told Kate Hawkesby his organisation had mixed feelings over the proposal.

While they are glad something is been done, they don't think the plans are going far enough.

"These proposals are definitely an improvement, but we would like to see them even stronger.

"We have some concerns over the statistics, but right now we need to do everything we can to save these dolphins."
