Associate finance minster David Parker joins Mike Hosking to talk about changes to the Overseas Investment Act that will be used to prevent assets being sold to off-shore buyers.

The Government's announced its tightening up foreign investment rules, allowing it to veto investments in companies it believes are critical to security or democracy.

It comes in the form of a 'national interest test' to cover everything from airports to media companies.

Parker says it's modelled on something Australia, who use a high level discretion.

"It's not held by the normal decision making minsters under the overseas investment act, it's held by the Minister of Finance.

"The Minster of Finance can occasionally reach in and say 'I think this requires the Government to have a look at it' and has a broad discretion to decline it."
