National memorial for Mt Erebus disaster victims approved

A man who lost his mother in the Erebus disaster says the approval of new national memorial is a win for common sense.

The Waitemata Local Board has voted in favour of granting land owner approval to the $3.5 million memorial in Auckland's Parnell Rose Garden.

It comes more than 40 years after Flight TE901 crashed into Antarctica's Mt Erebus killing all 257 people on board.

David Ling told Mike Hosking he's been extremely disappointed to see the project delayed by what he says are misleading comments from opponents.

"Claims the memorial would gobble up green space would be terrible, it will only cover 150 square metres out of 55 thousand square metres."

Mr Ling says it shouldn't have taken this long and the need for a memorial shouldn't have to be defended.

He says nobody ever really spoke to the families and, without being able to express themselves, they've become the lost victims of Erebus - until now.
