The Government won't be using its growing surplus to pay off the rising debt of District Health Boards.
The underlying debt of DHBs has surpassed $400 million.
Both Finance Minister Grant Robertson and Minister of Health David Clark have defended the blowout by pointing the finger at the previous National Government.
Health Minister David Clark says told Mike Hosking DHBs need to manage their finances better, rather than asking for more money.
"We will certainly be looking to make sure they are funded sustainably.
"DHB's have got to manage effectively, within the money which is available."
