After 30 years, Japan is openly resuming commercial whaling, doing away with the pretence of "scientific research".

The country has announced it's leaving the International Whaling Commission to resume whaling in its own waters.

Project Jonah General Manager Darren Grover told Tim Dower while it's good news for the whales in our waters, it's not such good news for those further north.

"Luckily, our whales don't go as far north as the northern hemisphere, or humpbacks and fin whales. It is just incredibly say."

According to Japan's Asahi newspaper, whale meat makes up only 0.1% of all meat sold in Japan.
