The Government's plan to offer free driving lessons as part of the school curriculum may be extended to other family members.
A pilot scheme in Napier found around half of the students' parents didn't have their full licence either, and weren't able to coach their children how to drive.
William Colenso College principal Daniel Murfitt told Mike Hosking in places like Hawke's Bay, public transport is sparse at best and non-existent in most cases.
"It's critical for young people to get work and if they don't have a driver's license and they drive they end up in the justice system."
