Alcohol bottles will soon feature mandatory warning labels highlighting the risks of drinking during pregnancy.
The joint Australia and New Zealand food regulation authority voted overwhelmingly to make the labels mandatory, instead of voluntary as it has been up until now.
Auckland University research shows 23 percent of women drank alcohol during their first trimester of pregnancy while 13 percent drank during their second trimester.
Food Safety Minister Damien O'Connor told Mike Yardley labelling won't completely stop that, but he hopes it's one more step to raising awareness and discouraging the drinking.
He said people have to be aware that alcohol can affect a foetus at any stage of pregnancy.
