The Prime Minister has given thanks to our longest serving female politician.

Jacinda Ardern was speaking at the launch of Dame Annette King's autobiography in Wellington last night.

A new biography of Annette King provides new details and an insider's account of significant periods in Labour's history - from Rogernomics, through several leadership changes to King's role in the coalition talks with NZ First after the 2017 election.

Ardern says it's an honour to have had the chance to work with King and to call her a friend.

"I stood alongside a woman who opened the door to politics, rammed her foot inside that door and helped along as many women as possible, and I consider myself one of those."

Dame Annette King told Mike Hosking she was currently enjoying the challenge of being New Zealand's High Commissioner to Canberra

"I am really enjoying it, especially staying in Canberra. The work is just fantastic, when you get into it, from defence to security, we are very well integrated with Australia and we work very well together."

King says that it took a little bit of convincing to make the decision of writing a book, but hopes the public is interested in what she has to say.

"It wasn't my choice to have a book, I didn't choose this, Brent Edwards approached me and said he wanted to write a book about me. He thought there would be a story in it and people would be interested in what I have been through."

As well as King's own personal and political life, the book provides new details about the leadership changes from Helen Clark to Phil Goff, then to David Shearer, David Cunliffe, Andrew Little and the days of Little's handover to Jacinda Ardern.
