A spokesperson for the Council of Licensed Firearms Owners says any changes to New Zealand's gun laws should be thoroughly investigated before going ahead.

This comes after Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern promised changes to gun laws following the deadly Christchurch terror attack which left 50 people dead and many more injured.

Council of Licensed Firearms Owners spokesperson Nicole McKee told Mike Hosking we need to look at the bigger picture.

"We fully support the Government in their investigation into looking into whether or not there need to be legislative changes."

"We just want to make sure that those changes will be effective, to stop this happening again, not kneejkerk, reactive legislation," she said.

Australia made sweeping gun reforms following the Port Arthur mass shooting which killed 35 people.

When asked whether she agreed with Australia's gun laws, McKee said she would need to see evidence that it worked.

"We need to have evidence after a thorough investigation that, that would be the way to go."

"What we have seen in Australia, is that although there has been a banning of semi-automatics, it actually hasn't changed the ability for terrorists to get in there and commit some heinous crimes still over there with firearms."

She said we need to look at the bigger picture to stop things like that happening.
