Concern over new privacy guidelines for landlords and tenants

New privacy guidelines have outlined what's reasonable for landlords to ask prospective tenants.

The office of the Privacy Commissioner has released the new rules, categorising requests for information into - sometimes, always and almost never justified.

It includes things like employment history and age, as unreasonable to ask.

Property Investors Federation President, Sharon Cullwick, told Mike Hosking she's worried about some of the things in the "almost never justified" category.

"For example broad consents to collect information from other sources, someone's drivers licences number which we think it a bit unusual because how are we supposed to do credit checks on someone [and] someone's employment history."

She said the guidelines are bad for tenants as well as landlords.

"By making it harder for tenants to actually find a property and move into a property, means there will be more houses which will be vacant for a longer time and more tenants will be homeless and in emergency housing."
