New Zealanders are being urged to change our mindset when it comes to holidaying in our own country.

With the tap of international travellers turned off, Kiwis are being encouraged to get around our own country.

Some people however believe New Zealand is too expensive to travel and holiday in.

That idea is being rejected by Tourism Industry Aotearoa.

CEO Chris Roberts told Mike Hosking while New Zealand has higher prices in terms of things like petrol and groceries, that doesn't apply to core tourism products.

"Bungy jumping, sky diving, tours out to conservation areas, those are all competitively priced with what you'd pay elsewhere in the world."

He says there will be some deals but we shouldn't expect huge discounts.

"They actually end up making things worse for themselves."

"There's a certain cost to providing any product or service, and if you start providing to your customers at less than what it cost you to provide, then you're actually digging a bigger hole for yourself."
