A number of farmers are calling for legislation to call a steak, a steak.
Australian and European dairy farmers want descriptions such as 'pattie' and 'steak' strictly for meat products, and not vegetarian alternatives. Â
Federated New Zealand dairy spokesperson Chris Lewis told Mike Hosking he is keeping a close eye on the issue here.
Lewis says he is happy with the current labelling for a 'vege-pattie' but the consumer will ultimately decide if changes are needed.
Dairy farmers also say transparency is needed to deal with murky labelling of milk.
Lewis agrees the current labelling can be misleading.
“Milk from a mammal is fine, but if want to manufacture nut milks with a whole lot of water, it should be properly labelled as a juice product."
