A former Attorney-General says it's appalling Kiwis aren't doing their civic duty.

Fewer than one-in-five New Zealanders turn up for jury service.

One main problem was the $80-dollars a day compensation has little pull.

Former National cabinet minister Chris Finlayson told Mike Hosking he thinks there's a lot of people happy to take from the country, but not prepared to give.

"People need to front up and recognise that, as citizens, they have a duty to do jury service."
