Chris Cahill: 'Increasingly difficult' for Police to engage with gangs

Police are warning Aucklanders to be prepared for a large funeral procession for a senior head hunter gang member today.

There's expected to be a large number of patched members in Auckland to farewell a Head Hunters member who died in police custody.

And there hasn't exactly been a good track record with these things - and questions are being asked as to why the public should get these warnings rather than the gang members themselves being told to behave.

Police association president Chris Cahill told Mike Hosking even though Police make efforts to liaise with gangs, it’s not always easy.

“It is getting increasingly difficult, as the gangs grow new members they’re less likely to engage with Police. We’ve heard a lot around the 501s, they’re less likely to engage, so it has got harder over the years without a doubt.”
