Dogs of Auckland can ride for free.
After a trial of pet travel on the city's trains, the practice has now been declared permanent.
Auckland Transport has carried out two trials and surveyed train travellers, with only 12 per cent opposing it.
Auckland Councillor Cathy Casey told Mike Hosking it's exciting.
"There’s 117,000 registered dogs in Auckland. That’s a big travelling public.
"What that means is that now you can take your dog to a far flung park on the train."
Dogs must wear an approved muzzle and lead or a pet carrier, and can only travel at off peak times.
