Canterbury DHB is putting a massive deficit down to the Christchurch earthquake, which happened eight years ago tomorrow.

It's closing in on a $100 million projected deficit for this financial year - 50 per cent higher than the one posted in the 2017 and 2018 financial year.

District Health Board CEO David Meates told Mike Hosking the board's having to pay for private sector facilities because it doesn't have enough.

"With the earthquake, we had 44 buildings that were demolished and because of the constrained capacity, our inability to actually deal with some of these significantly earthquake-damaged buildings, that we continue to work and operate within."
