Environmentalists will keep a close eye on the new coalition government, making sure they live up to pre-election promises.

Labour, the Greens and New Zealand First have all committed to restoring the country's waterways, bringing them up to a truly swimmable state.

Fish and Game chief executive, Bryce Johnson told Mike Hosking he's pleased water has become a central issue.

He said claims water charges will mean the end of profitable farming, are nonsense.

"It was always called a water tax, it was really a water royalty and even if it's not there now I'm sure it will come later."
