The gloves are off in the war for Western Springs and it could get bloody.

Speedway announced yesterday that they will fight to stay at the iconic venue – and may now refuse to move to Colin Dale park in South Auckland.

Speedway sent an open letter to Mayor Phil Goff, outlining their intention to stay at Western Springs.

Speedway Promotions Director Bill Buckley told Mike Hosking there has been a major falling out between Speedway and Facilities New Zealand.

"We did all of our due diligence and then the council had a spat between themselves and voted against it, and then sat on their hands.

"We had a clause we would keep Western Springs until we got a new facility. They agreed with everything but now they are trying to backpedal."

Buckley warned Goff that he has "a very serious situation on his hands now as it appears you have allowed the RFA to throw the sport out of its home with no alternative in place".

'They want to argue it out, they are trying to find somebody else to run. I think the whole city supports us being at Western Springs, a whole lot of people think we should stay at the venue.

"Concerts are the main things they want at the venue, all they care about is getting their hands on the money."

Speedway has been based at Western Spring for more than 90 years.
