A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck near Wellington this morning, and was felt as far north as Gisborne and near the bottom of the South Island, according to Geonet.

More than 22,500 people had reported feeling the quake by 8am. Almost 100 said it felt severe while 10 said it felt extreme.

There is no sign of serious damage around the epicentre of the quake Horowhenua.

Horowhenua Mayor Bernie Wanden told Mike Hosking council staff and emergency services set out to look for damage right after the jolt.

Wanden says staff and emergency services are searching around Levin and the wider district for any signs of damage.

He says there is no indication of damage so far.
