Modified free to air timebands and classifications will be shown on our television screens from early May.

The Broadcasting Standards Authority is getting rid of Parental Guidance Recommended and Adults Only labels.

They're being replaced with G, PG, M, 16 and 18 labels.

BSA chief executive Belinda Moffitt told Mike Hosking it was a joint decision between the BSA and broadcasters.

"Let's get a consistency of labels. It makes it less confusing for audiences trying to decide what to watch, and the new labels give audiences more information about that adults only category."

She says the move is set to better protect TV audiences from unsuitable content.

"It's free. It goes into our homes free. Having these standards is really important, and have tools and mechanisms do help parents protect kids is really important."

The move is set to take effect in early May.
