The appointment of former Olympic discus thrower Beatrice Faumuina means women now hold a 5-4 majority on the board.
Faumuina told Tim Dower she was driven to join Sport New Zealand because that organisation supported her during her career.
"The board has a great willingness to see New Zealand succeed at a local and international level.
"One of the fundamental strengths of the board is inclusion."
The discuss champion represented New Zealand at four Olympic Games and five Commonwealth Games, and was inducted into the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame last year.
She later took on a role as a New Zealand diplomat in New York between 2015-2018.
