A 44-year-old woman has been arrested in relation to a firearms callout in Tauranga this morning.

Western Bay of Plenty Area Commander Inspector Clifford Paxton told Larry Williams shots were fired before 9am at a property adjacent to Bellevue Primary School.

Police are still investigating why the shots were fired.

"Police have recovered a shotgun from the property," Paxton says.

The school was put into lockdown, and Paxton has praised their efforts.

"I think the school's done a fantastic job in terms of how they've locked down that school and how they've taken care of the students. We're also very grateful of the support of people in the area and the support of police as they went about their business."

Nearby Otumoetai College was also locked down.

Police are continuing to look into unrelated alleged gun threats at another Tauranga school.

Paxton says that they are unrelated. He says another report of a student threatening to shoot up a different school is also unrelated.
