Researchers from three of our universities are calling for an end to fat shaming.

Professors from the University of Otago, Massey, and Victoria University of Wellington have come together asking for government action to help end ‘fat stigma’ in society.

This would also mean the media will have to play its part in taking the taboo away from those who are overweight.

Senior lecturer at Massey University Dr Cat Pausé told Larry Williams often when the media shows images of

"It makes people think of fat people as inhuman, it contributes to the objectification of them, and it reproduces the very fat shame and fat stigma I am trying to combat."

She says she does not want to dictate what people say or what words they use, but rather update discrimination laws so that people are not denied services based on their weight.
