It is not just teenagers and youths engaging in binge drinking in this country.
A Massey and Auckland university study has found that 40 percent of people aged 50 plus are involved in what is called hazardous drinking.
Hazardous is anything that can lead to hospitalisation because of drinking or lead to long term effects such as cancer.
Research co-leader Andy Towers told Mike Hosking that alcohol is like drug and can be more harmful than we think
"We are starting to understand that there is no safe level of alcohol."
