Fears vaccine mandate could create a shortage of midwives

The new vaccine mandate for healthcare workers could create a shortage of midwives in some parts of the country.

The High Court has rejected a legal challenge from four midwives who didn't want to be jabbed.

Christchurch's St George's Maternity Hospital is facing a midwife shortage, and several of Taranaki's midwives are threatening to quit.

College of Midwives Chief Executive Alison Eddy told Mike Hosking for some people, hesitancy becomes resistance when they're told what to do.

“We know we’ve got vaccine hesitant population across the board; I think when you put a compliance around something, that pushes people into a corner and they become resistant.”

The mandate applies to a range of health and disability workers, and the colleagues they work with.
