There is a suggestion tyres be taxed at the border

Auto industry groups say that would see motorists pay a set fee for tyre disposal.

Currently retailers charge anywhere from five-dollars to $17 to dispose of tyres.

Adele Rose, chief executive of the 3R Group, which develops programmes to recycle or responsibly dispose of used products, told Mike Hosking that current model needs to go.

"The retailers or the garages wont be able to charge you the fee that they are currently charging because that fee will be put at point of import."

She says the new system would be better as the fee will be set at a controlled amount.

She says New Zealand is a long way behind many other countries who are successfully recycling their tyres in a sustainable manner.
