Leighton Smith: You can't have a country without borders

There has been a discussion, which has been ongoing for some time now, about borders or borderless situations.

It started either between the American southern border or Europe, but it doesn't matter because they both coincide.

We in New Zealand think we are lucky because we are so far away, and making it here on a boat isn't so easy. However, I wouldn't rest on my laurels on that assumption under any stretch of the imagination.

As long as the Australians are fighting on our behalf, which they have been doing, we are safer than we otherwise would be from any form of invasion.

The people who say that they can't make it here on the boats are the same people who believe the Wright brothers never lived and we can't fly, so it is worthy of attention.

You believe in a country and a state.

You believe in New Zealand being an independent nation and state.

Whatever our internal problems may be, they are our problems, and we don't want anybody interfering with them. We don't want to be told how to run our country.

If you take away our borders, you don't have a government anymore. You cannot have a country without borders or a government, and without borders, you have nothing to govern.

Where do you think this leaves us, apart from chaos?
