A South Auckland high school has come up with a way for students to afford formal ball wear.

A group of students at James Cook high school in Manurewa have set up a donation drive for gowns and suits.

Students will only have to provide a donation in exchange for a dress or a suit.

Principal Grant McMillan told Rachel Smalley formal wear is always expensive, even to hire.

"I am no fashion expert but as the father of a daughter I can tell you it's not always cheap."

He said going to a ball is expensive and believes many students around the country would benefit from such a scheme, like his students can.

"I think there's an opportunity to work in that community way, so that every young person in New Zealand gets that opportunity to feel special and have that evening, that memory for a very long time to come."
