Outrage over 30 kilometres an hour speed limits in CBD’s may be misplaced.

Aucklanders have made their opposition clear to council proposals that the slow speed limit be implemented in parts of the CBD.

However, the speed limits are already in place in parts of Wellington and Christchurch – with proven results.

Traffic engineer at ViaStrada Glen Koorey told Larry Williams that, in Christchurch, the areas with the 30 km/h speed limits have seen a 36 per cent drop in injuries.

Koorey says that car trips across the city have become slower – by one minute.

“When you look at those benefits you’re getting from it – those safety benefits, the amenity benefits, people feeling a lot safer walking and cycling - it’s a small price to pay.”
