Auckland's first homeless census will include more than people who sleep on the streets.

More than a thousand volunteers are taking part in the count, from 9.30pm.

National Maori Authority chairman Matthew Tukaki is saying it's a waste of time as he thinks people will get missed because they move about so much.

But Housing First director Fiona Hamilton told Larry Williams people cycle between different forms of homelessness.

She says they're also including data from emergency accommodation providers.

"So that will be the transitional and emergency accommodation, women's refuge, and the people who are in motels on special needs grants."
