NBR's rich list is out today and it's been slammed as unhealthy by a sociologist.

Graeme Hart remains at the top and Global technology investor Peter Thiel making an entry at number two after becoming a New Zealand citizen.

University of Auckland's Dr Ronald Kramer told Rachel Smalley what worries him is the underlying representation of inequality the list puts out there.

"We're talking about growing disparities between a top 1 to 10 percent and the next 80 percent of the population, so I think that's the most disturbing element of all of this."
