Heather du Plessis-Allan: Auckland Transport ignoring will of the public

What’s the point in having your say when a bunch of unelected officials are just going to ignore it?

That’s what Auckland Transport’s just done. It’s just completely ignored what Aucklanders had to say about reducing speed limits and gone ahead and done it anyway.

It has dropped the speed limits on all of the 700-odd roads it was considering - except for 20. That’s the bone that it threw Aucklanders: 20 roads

Oh, and the other bone is that it’s not going to drop the motorway feeding streets to 30. They’re going to 40 instead. Lucky you...

This is despite Aucklanders saying they didn’t want this to happen. 57% of submitters who said either yes or no to general support said no. 57% of Aucklanders didn’t want this, but it didn’t matter did it, because they had a plan and they just pushed ahead with it anyway

I apologise to the rest of the country for boring you with another Auckland story, but this coming your way. This is a debate that’s cropping all over the place about whether to reduce speeds, and if you feel like it’s a losing battle, well, apparently, it is.

Because our determination to cycle everywhere like we’re living in Copenhagen appears to be completely blinding us, so it’s costing commuters’ time, It’s costing business money as they try to get their goods around the city as fast as they can, And it’s pointless, because traffic regulates itself doesn’t it?

When everyone’s using the road, it’s too full to go fast. When there’s just you on the road, you can go 50km’s an hour, and what’s the harm in doing that? There’s hardly anyone around.

The problem isn’t peak hour. You hardly manage to hit full speed anyway. The problem is for the businesses who deliberately get on the road early in the morning and late at night to get as much work done as possible, when they can go 50km’s per hour.

Imagine how frustrating it’s going to be, being the only one on the road, going 40 tops, because Auckland Transport said so.
