Heather du Plessis-Allan: Sports players and business travellers deserve vaccine priority

To the question of whether the Black Caps should get the covid jab early: of course they should.

Logically, you’d roll out the jab to high risk groups first and then work your way down.

The Black Caps need to travel for their jobs. That means they could catch Covid while overseas, that makes high risk, so they get to jump the queue.

In fact, so should anyone who needs to go overseas for work right now: Olympians, the Warriors, rugby players, and all business people who can prove that they need to travel for work.

It’s not as if they’ll be taking the jabs from people who need them more.

We are at very little risk of catching Covid in New Zealand given our borders are shut, and will be that way until we have enough of us jabbed.

Obviously, we have higher risk groups who need to go ahead of the Black Caps:  frontline border workers, their families and frontline health workers

But once you’ve jabbed them and reduced the chances even further of Covid getting through the border, it then simply becomes a case of rolling the jab out to all five million Kiwis.

And it doesn’t really matter who goes first because, as I say, we’re not really catching Covid, are we?

So does it really matter if a cricketer goes ahead of a grandmother in Bluff?

But as I say, I don’t think we can roll it out to sports people who need to travel, but then refuse it to business people who need to travel.

Both are travelling for their jobs and both deserve the protection of a jab if they want it.

We are still hugely dependent on our exporters and the income they generate for New Zealand.

We have asked a lot of them over the last year, sitting behind closed borders and wringing out of their businesses as much as they can without face to face meetings

But some of them really need to get to their clients, and if they need a jab to be able to do that safely in their opinion, then I think they deserve to be prioritised.
