Heather du Plessis-Allan: The main reason why I'm disappointed by 'Megxit'

So that’s it for Harry and Meghan. We’ve had the last official engagement, and they’re off to live their best civilian lives in Canada.

And I’m disappointed. I’m gutted at how this has all played out. Because in this drama, we’ve all chosen sides and I’ve ended up picking the side of the royal family.

And that is not the place I wanted to find myself in,

Because the truth is, I’m a republican. I don’t think we should be ruled by a royal family. I think it’s weird that a group of people, selected entirely by birth, get to rule over millions of people around the globe in countries, like ours, that choose to continue to be part of that weird set up.

I’d like us break free. I’d like us to become a republic and do our own thing, because in this country, we get ahead because we work hard, not because of who our parents are. The Royal Family is the complete opposite of that.

So you can see why I’m uncomfortable at siding with the royal family, and the reason I’m disappointed is because I reckon I’m not alone in picking their side of this fight.

I reckon a lot of people have found Harry and Meghan’s behaviour unacceptable and brattish. They haven’t liked the plans to cash in on their royalty, the demands for anyone else to pay for their security, making the security guys pick up their groceries, not taking the baby to see the Queen.

That’s so awful that I reckon most people will have ended up siding with the Queen and Charles and William, who by contrast look dignified.

What a bummer. What a missed opportunity.

If only Harry and Meghan had done this properly and with dignity, we might’ve sided with them and cheered their decision to become civilians like the rest of us, and seen more starkly just what an antiquated institution the royal family is.

Instead, we’ve had the complete opposite reaction.

They’re the baddies, the royals are the goodies and - forget a debate about republicanism - we just feel sorry for a granny dealing with two spoilt brats in her family.
