Kindergarten teachers want to earn the same as their primary and secondary colleagues, now they have reached pay parity.

The Educational Institute has begun collective agreement renewal negotiations with the Ministry of Education.

NZEI early childhood representative Virginia Oakley told Heather du Plessis-Allan the public will be on their side.

Oakley says it's not true that there's more work in preparing for year 13 classes than kindergarten.

“I think if you talk to anyone who has a child in kindergarten they will support this. The job we do is very tough, but it is rewarding.’
