Kiwis are opening their hearts and wallets this Christmas after the Whakaari White Island eruption.

The Middlemore Foundation have set up a donation page on their website to fund medical equipment and supplies for the National Burns Centre, where nine people are currently being treated.

CEO Sandra Geange says the unit needs help.

She says the disaster has been tough for all involved and medical specialists have shown unwavering commitment to patients and their families.

"They know what they're doing with the families and the patients and we at Middlemore Foundation are just in awe of the work the National Burns Team do."

The unit's service coordinator Tracey Perrett told Andrew Dickens donations will be put towards items that will put patients at ease.

"Things like distraction devices like iPads, communications, and equipment for ongoing rehabilitation."

She says that patients spend one day in the burns unit for each percentage of their body they have burnt - so those who have 30 percent burns spend a month in hospital.

Minister of Health David Clark says the Government's looking at providing the Counties Manukau DHB with additional funding.

But he says there's no timeframe.
