Changes could be on the way for our surrogacy laws.

Labour MP Tamati Coffey has announced a new member's bill, paving the way for more modern laws.

Currently, the intending parent has to formally adopt their child, but the new law would give them immediate rights.

Broadcaster Toni Street has been through the surrogacy system. She says it took four and a half months after her son was born before she could formally adopt him.

She told Heather du Plessis-Allan that these changes would be a huge relief to expectant parents. 

"The surrogate and her husband are actually the legal guardians, so if anything within those four and a half months was to go wrong with your child, if you need any medical treatment, you'd have to get sign off from them."

She says that they went through a huge process during the pregnancy, which carried on after he was born.
