One of the leading America's Cup veterans is vehemently against racing being held offshore.
The defence of the Auld Mug looks to be heading offshore, after the holders were unable to reach a funding agreement with the New Zealand government for it to be held on these shores.
Tom Ehman, who was vice-commodore of the Golden Gate yacht club when their Cup defence was taken to Bermuda in 2017, told Heather du Plessis-Allan he doesn't like the plan.Â
"I was on the board, they came to us and the commodore said we could do that, and I was opposed. We could have run it in San Francisco, we could have run it any number of places in the States, and that's the way the Cup's always been run."
However, he says that as long as the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron members are supportive of the idea, not much can be done about it.Â
