A ban on alcohol sponsorship is unlikely going to affect the finances of small town sports club.

Green MP Chloe Swarbrick has drafted a members bill to end all alcohol sponsorship and advertising.

Many provincial and grassroots sports club in New Zealand get sponsorship from alcohol companies - but Tim Chambers from the Department of Public Health at Otago University says much of that sponsorship comes in the form of kit or bags.

He told Heather du Plessis-Allan that the smallest clubs get around $1 million - while professional teams, according to one report, get around $30 million.

"What we need to remember is the number of excise tax we get off alcohol is around $1 billion, so it's just a drop in the bucket."

However, he says that the ban would break the link between sport and alcohol.
