New Zealand is being called to keep up with the rest of the world in preventing people gambling on the banks.

ANZ Australia has introduced a block on online gambling once a customer is at 85 per cent of their card's credit limit.

FinCap's Tim Barnett told Heather du Plessis-Allan people don't acknowledge they have a problem gambling habit, until it's too late.

He says often the money runs out before people show up at a budgeting service for help.

"We can't rely on casinos and taverns to kick out problem gamblers, as many more people are doing it online and alone."
