New Zealand is reeling after a shock return to alert level 2 for most places – and a stricter alert level 3 in Auckland.

There are four more probable Covid-19 cases in NZ - all linked to the four community based cases revealed last night - as well as one additional case in managed isolation.

Police have closed State Highway 1 at Bombay when they began setting up checkpoints to prevent Aucklanders fleeing the city to dodge lockdown and long queues developed over the day, amongst the nine roadblocks in place.

Commissioner Andrew Coster says they started the checkpoints when the order came into force that enabled them to do so. That followed criticism from the Thames-Coromandel mayor saying checkpoints should have been in place earlier.

Coster says they've been clear that under level 2 lockdown there's no legal authority for police - or others - to establish checkpoints.

To evaluate the first day back under lockdown, Jack Tame and Shane Te Pou joined Heather du Plessis-Allan on The Huddle to discuss the day’s developments.
