More than 2,000 people have signed a petition to stop the construction of a KFC in Ōtara.

People are instead calling for a shopping franchise such as a supermarket, to encourage healthy eating.

Fast food restaurants such as McDonald's and Wendy's are already in the suburb, but there is no supermarket.

Neale Jones told Heather du Plessis-Allan in lower socio-economic areas with fast-food restaurants, people will be more inclined to buy there.

"That's just human nature."

Mr Jones added it is great people in the community are taking a stand.

Trish Sherson said it is a positive move by the community, that could lead to widespread changes.

"What makes a community, and what are the things at the core of that like easy access to healthy food and easy access to key services that they need, rather than allowing others just to make the decision on where they think they should be."

Meanwhile, Shane Jones has indicated that the New Zealand First Party are set to pack up and distance themselves from the Labour Party.

Mr Neale Jones is in no way surprised, and believes Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern needs to remain calm.

"If she makes it look like a problem, it's going to be a problem.

"I think they're going to try and get into National's space a bit."

Ms Sherson agreed, saying New Zealand First are aligning themselves with National's priorities around small business and the economy.
