New Zealanders are being urged to add face masks to their home emergency kit.

Health Minister Chris Hipkins says masks will play an important in containing any further Covid-19 outbreaks.

He says people don't need to wear them now - at alert level one - because there is no evidence of community transmission.

But he says at level two they'll be encouraged where physical distancing is tricky - like on public transport and in shops.

Meanwhile, a new poll this morning suggesting most New Zealanders want our borders to stay shut to non-residents, despite high-powered calls to soften restrictions to ease economic pain.

The New Zealand Herald Kantar Vote 2020 poll shows 68 per cent of people think our border policy should be kept as is.

About 29 per cent believe the ban could be relaxed to allow in non-New Zealand residents and citizens, so long as they quarantine for two weeks and pay for it.

Former Prime Minister John Key says border restrictions should be loosened so that universities and companies can bring in foreign students and skilled workers, and pay for their own quarantine.

The poll also finds Aucklanders are more likely than others to favour a softening.
