Voters looking for fireworks wouldn't have found them in last night's leaders debate.

Judith Collins and Jacinda Ardern went head-to-head for the first time on prime time TV this election.

Afterwards Ardern commented that politics is not a 'blood sport' - but this was a chance for them to show their policies.

A political expert observed Ardern took a positive approach - focusing on the need to help farmers be sustainable.

Meanwhile, Massey University's Grant Duncan says Judith Collins was defensive.

He says she fell back on the view climate change policy is costly and should be toned down, refusing to see the opportunity for innovation.
