Christchurch brewery The Fermentist has today announced it's new beer - the Kiwi Pale Ale.

What makes this one exciting is that it is the nation's first certified carbon-neutral certified beer.

All of the emissions from the life cycle of the brew have been taken into account - from the fertiliser that goes into growing the grain, right through to the refrigeration of the beer in the consumer's home.

General manager of The Fermentist Simon Taylor told Heather du Plessis-Allan that they believe this is the right thing to do.

He says that this is not just a marketing exercise, and they see it is as the way businesses should be.

"This business was founded on the basis of sustainability. We want to be able to measure what we're doing, and once we have those measurements in place, we can start managing our impact on the environment and our carbon footprint."

Taylor says all parts of the manufacturing process are environmentally friendly, including solar panels and solar hot water at their factory in order to keep their electrical use down.
